Food plays a prominent role in our daily life. When eating, selection of the right food is important to lead a successful and healthy life. Mitahara, means observation of Moderate Diet.
Mitahara or Moderate Diet leads to healthy life and heavy food only induces sleep. Purity of food leads to purity of mind.
There is misapprehension that a large quantity of food is necessary for health and strength. It is not true, the right kind and quantity of food intake matter more.
Food
In the matter of food and drinks we should be a master. We should not have the least craving or sense-hankering for any particular food. We must not become a slave to any particular food.
Mitahara
Almost all diseases ( dis – ease = disease) are due to irregularity of meals, overeating and unwholesome food. Eating all things at all times is highly dangerous.
Mitahara can be gradually practiced. Initially, we can take less quantity as per our daily routine. Then instead of a heavy night meal, let us take light meals with limited quantity. You can observe the next morning, you feel very light and active.
All of a sudden reducing food intake drastically is not good practice, we have to make our body adapt for new changes in diet.
Take a half stomachful of wholesome food. Fill a quarter with pure water. Leave the rest free. This is Mitahara.

Fasting
Do not fast much, it will produce weakness in your body. Occasionally fasting once or twice in a month will suffice. Because, when you follow mitahara, that itself will take care of many aspects of our mind and body.
During fasting one should not think of various foods. Constant thinking of the food when we fast cannot bring you the desired result. During fasting, avoid company, live alone, utilise your time in Yogic Sadhana or visit a temple and spend a whole day there.
After fast do not take any heavy food. Milk or some non-citrus fruit juice is good.
Become a master of your own
Live a natural life. Take simple food that is agreeable. You should have your own menu to suit your constitution. You are yourself the best judge to select a Sattvic diet.
Every diet may not be suitable for everyone. Observe yourself, when one form of diet is not suitable or if your feel constipated, change the diet and try some other Sattvic food items,
